Valais is a long alpine valley canton running from Lake Geneva to the high peaks around Zermatt and Verbier, with an economy weighted toward tourism, viticulture, and agriculture. Its resort municipalities are subject to the federal second-home cap (Lex Weber), which limits new second-home construction once second homes exceed 20 percent of a municipality's housing stock, making existing chalets and apartments in capped resorts particularly sought after. Outside the resort towns, the Rhone valley floor holds a more conventional primary-residence market around Sion and Martigny.
